The Green Business Directory Snohomish County has just come online and we'd like you to or those you know to be a part of it.

LSISC Newsletter since 2007, and we have been showcasing businesses and community groups on the side bar at no cost. There has been very little $$ support to sustain the Newsletter which has been sent out for the past 5 years. Many who are living sustainably/ green, have been asking for a green directory in Snohomish County, but no one had stepped up to get it done.

"Who are and where are" the Green business in Snohomish County?

So, producing the Green Directory will help to offset the Internet and time expense of the newsletter, plus create a directory that everyone, even those who are not on the e-list, can use.

Please help us get the word out to all you think businesses and organiztion would benefit to have an ad in the Green Business Directory in Snohomish County.Ads are for the year and collected via paperless payments on paypal whenever possible.

NEW:Green News Online in Snohomish County

Snohomish County now has a Green Newspaper: www.transitionportgardner.org/news comes on line this week with news about projects that are happening in Snohomish County and nearby. Dean Smith, editor is doing this as a project for Transition port Gardner and Carbon Masters.

The site will carry daily stories for those who want to make their lives more sustainable. "News for them that's thinking from them that's doing," says Smith. This week's front pages contains articles about urban farming, solar power, electric cars and the coal trains that are passing through the county.

Olivia Park School Garden Has Been Reclaimed

The Mukilteo district school’s project is equal parts science lesson, civics lesson and neighborhood reclamation.

One volunteer, John Hunkele, cleared out the blackberry vines — 19,000 pounds worth — with a machete. Beneath the brambles were several apple and pear trees that had been planted a dozen years ago.Many people are stepping forward to help or donate to the community garden. A greenhouse has been given to the effort as well as a handmade mosaic paver compass. In the works is a weather vane in the shape of a polar bear, the school mascot.

The garden will include a mix of short- and long-term crops, including potatoes, corn, squash, cucumbers, beets and carrots as well as currants, huckleberries, nuts, figs, strawberries and raspberries. click here to continue reading

Bottled Beverage Company Looking to Open up Facility in Everett

At Wednesday evening’s Everett City Council meeting, Steve Winter of Tethys Enterprises unveiled before the public his company’s proposal to start up a bottled beverage company in North Everett. Winter described the proposed facility as “environmentally responsible” which would utilize fully compostable bio-degradable plastic bottles.

“This plant will position Everett as the global leader in environmentally responsible beverage manufacturing and distribution,” Winter said.

The proposed 1 million square foot facility could create up to 1,000 jobs with a projected payroll of over $61 million.

“We have a great opportunity to have a very clean industry,” commented Mayor Ray Stephanson on Wednesday.

Non-native plant removal and Streamside Tree Planting! When:Friday, September 18th, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Where: Private property along Whitehorse Creek, near Arlington/Trafton area Join the Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force for United Way’s 2009 Day of Caring project!

The Task Force needs your help to make Whitehorse Creek, in Arlington, a healthier habitat for people, wildlife and fish - especially salmon! We are seeking volunteers to complete the following tasks: 1) Help remove Himalayan Blackberry, an invasive plant; 2) Stage and plant native plants. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more about Pacific Northwest riparian ecosystems and the critters that live there. No training is required, and all tools and some snacks and drinks will be provided. Participants will need to dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a lunch. Be prepared to get a little dirty, meet others, do a good deed for salmon, and have fun! Planting trees for salmon is important because trees provide shade for cooler water and prevent erosion. Community Transit and Oxy Gene on Aug 4th

National Night Out, Aug. 4

The first stop will be the National Night Out Against Crime, from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 4 at McCollum Park in Mill Creek. Now in its 25th year, National Night Out is a partnership between police departments and local communities to increase awareness of anti-crime programs. While learning how you can protect yourself and family, stop by the Community Transit booth to visit with Oxy Gene – defender of truth, justice and really clean air, check out the Double Tall bus, and learn about the Curb the Congestion program and how you can earn $54 toward your commute.

Community Transit staff will also be on hand to talk transit and answer questions at the Snohomish and Lake Stevens National Night Out events. Both the Snohomish event (Averill Park/Snohomish Boys and Girls Club) and the Lake Stevens event (1803 123rd Drive NE) will take place from about 4-8 p.m.

Community Transit Routes 105, 106, 412, 414, 810, 812 and 860 serve the McCollum Park Park & Ride.

To get to the Snohomish event, take Routes 270, 271, 275, 277 or 424.

For the Lake Stevens events, take Routes 221 or 280.

When they return on September 8, the Senate will tackle historic legislation that could create new jobs and opportunities in a clean energy economy while imposing strong new standards that limit global warming pollution.

Let's give them something to think about while they're home.

First on their minds should be our degrading environment and families struggling in these tough economic times. The Senate must pass a strong climate and energy bill that shifts us away from a fossil fuel economy and ensures access to quality jobs and job training for communities in need. Along with strong environmental provisions, the bill must include:

1. The Green Construction Careers Demonstration Project
A provision that would create middle class careers in the green economy for low-income Americans by improving access to, and the quality of, jobs in construction - the sector that will see the most job creation as we invest in (literally) building a green economy.

2. Funding for The Green Jobs Act
An existing program that ensures workers suffering the worst effects of the recession and of pollution will get the training and support they need to prepare for family-sustaining careers and that businesses will get the skilled workers they need to compete in the green economy.
Tell Your Senators to Pass a Strong Climate and Energy Bill this Fall.

You have power. When you stood up last month, the House of Representatives responded by passing the American Clean Energy and Security Act with our provisions included. Now it's the Senate's turn.

We've fought hard to get to this point and it would not have happened without you. Getting over the finish line will not be easy. We will need your strength and support in the coming months.

Forest Park Work Party Aug. 15th

On Saturday, August 15th, join us at Forest Park for a restoration work party. Hopefully it will be cooler by then - but there's guaranteed to be shade, thanks to the trees. We'll be working to clear more invasive ivy and holly from the park. We'll be preparing the area for plantings to be put in this fall/winter, thanks to a small stewardship grant from the Washington Native Plant Society.

We'll meet at 9:30am by the brown shed just past the East entrance. Light refreshments will be provided.

ARLINGTON — Patricia and Mark Lovejoy are launching their third year as coordinators of the Arlington Farmers Market, offering fresh organic produce grown in the Stillaguamish Valley, and other items.

“One of the main missions of Garden Treasures is to promote and revitalize the agricultural businesses here in the Stillaguamish River Valley,” said Mark Lovejoy.

The Lovejoys got a bit of a bonus this year when they were approved by the state of Washington to accept WIC and senior farmers market coupons. birthday, and realized a dream by opening an internet coffee house on July 18, 2005. You will receive a coffee culinary experience.

The coffee, espresso, smoothies, and loose leaf teas compliments Zippy’s Breakfast treats, Panini sandwiches, soups, fresh salads, and desserts.

Zippy’s walls are lined with creations from local artists of all ages.

We will be bringing in fresh treasures by the-truck-and-Subaru-full. If you enjoyed the May Garden Art Festival you will really have a dandy time at this shindig.

Bring your family to WSU Extension's second annual Natural Resources Field d\Day. Youth, adults and all family members will be given the chance to engage in a wide range of activities that include: bug catching, identifying (and maybe eating) native plants, taking forest measurements and learning how to keep our local watersheds healthy.

This free event is hosted to inspire awareness and interest in our local natural resources and what we can do to protect them. Knowledgeable staff and volunteers will implement hands-on activities designed to create a day of learning and fun for the entire family. This is a whole family event and all youth should come accompanied by an adult chaperone.

After three years the Clearwater Commons is delighted to announce that Snohomish County has given final approval to proceed with site development and building construction. The commons is a unique “deep green” project in an environmentally sensitive area. We are the first project of its kind to use comprehensive low impact development methods, intentional community values, innovative green building techniques, and environmental improvements based on the restoration of North Creek, an important endangered salmon habitat.

These 1 1/2 acre gardens invite both plant lovers and those interested in garden structures. Don and Mary have spent 25 years creating and re-creating garden rooms filled with many, and often unusual, varieties of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials. Visitors will see a 120 ft roadway border of mixed plantings with an immense 50+ year old willow as a backdrop; an "English style" garden featuring clematis, lilies, and roses; a pond garden; terraced gardens; a 1,500 square ft fenced kitchen garden with old brick pathways and courtyard; and more. Of interest also are a greenhouse and garden workshop, designed and built by Don. Stroll the woodland garden pathways and also enjoy the woodland view from a walkway along the castle walls, a large compost heap enclosure.

Aat Bontje and Pearl Wollin's Gardens

These 1 1/4 acre gardens grace the remodel of a 1910 era farm house and barn, from mostly recycled materials. Aat is now completing the transformation of the barn into a studio, greenhouse, shop, sauna and tool shed. Visitors will enjoy the park-like setting with mixed plantings of perennials and edibles throughout the gardens. Aat created a terraced wall garden, which includes an outdoor kitchen. Pearl has added 14 garden beds, as well as borders for the house, to the original 2 beds when they moved there 20 years ago and a huge array pot plantings. The beds have rewarded her with gifts of morels and a white truffle!

Driving Directions from I-5 South

Take Exit 192 in Everett. Get in left lane (41st Street West). Go west for approximately 3 blocks to 41st and Evergreen Way/Rucker Avenue. Turn left. Go 6 blocks to 47th Street, SE, and turn right. Park east of dead-end sign (.6 of a mile from Evergreen Way) near Pearl and Aat's gardens. (There's no parking in front of Don and Mary's.)

*The Living Campus Project

The Living Campus project involves planning, design, and campus landscape development to make comprehensive use of the College’s outdoor spaces as a botanical garden that will serve as a catalyst and laboratory for integrated learning and collaborative instruction, a preserve and interpretive center for the natural and cultural heritage of the Puget Sound Bioregion, a refuge for people, plants, and animals, and a model of sustainable practice.
