Coal Trains in Snohomish County

Have your voice heard on the 3rd Thursday of the month, 3-15 at the Evergreen Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1607 Fourth Avenue in Marysville at 6:30 p.m.about the development of  a new coal export facility at Cherry Point, north of Bellingham. 20 or more trains that are 1 1/2 miles long traveling the length of our state and through Snohomish County to Cherry Point.

There are 12 railroad crossings in Marysville alone - think of all of the traffic congestion and blocked businesses during the time these trains are traveling through. 130+ cars and 2 extra-large engines at either end make these noisier than normal as well. Freight trains are good - economical and environmentally sound, but these coal trains are beyond the normal freight train. Read about it in the Green News click here

What is a Transition Town?

Transition, Ready or Not

  • Have you hear of Transition Towns and wondered what they are?
  • Have you wondered where this economy is going and if it will ever be normal again?
  • Do you sometimes think we'd be better off if we could focus on our families and friends, rather than the frenzy that is life in America today?

If you answered "yes!" to any of those questions, we have information for you that could be life-changing!  Tune in to The Power of Peace on KSER, 90.7 FM (or kser.org on the web) on Monday, December 5th at 6:00 pm and listen to inspiring local activist and teacher Jackie Minchew talk about "Transition, Ready or Not!"

Don't let the "ready or not" part scare you; it may just turn out to be the best thing that's ever happened!

"It is often said that water crisis and scarcities will at some point lead to armed conflict. Whatever else divides the human community, whether we live upstream or downstream, in cities or in rural areas, water issues - the global water cycle itself - should link us in a common effort to protect and share it equitably, sustainably and peacefully. "
Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations

Olivia Park School Garden Has Been Reclaimed
By Eric Stevick Herald Writer

The Mukilteo district school’s project is equal parts science lesson, civics lesson and neighborhood reclamation.

One volunteer, John Hunkele, cleared out the blackberry vines — 19,000 pounds worth — with a machete. Beneath the brambles were several apple and pear trees that had been planted a dozen years ago. Many people are stepping forward to help or donate to the community garden. A greenhouse has been given to the effort as well as a handmade mosaic paver compass. In the works is a weather vane in the shape of a polar bear, the school mascot.

The garden will include a mix of short- and long-term crops, including potatoes, corn, squash, cucumbers, beets and carrots as well as currants, huckleberries, nuts, figs, strawberries and raspberries. click here to continue reading
